Ilesa, Osun State – Seven inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa early Tuesday morning after heavy rainfall caused part of the prison’s perimeter wall to collapse.

The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. when the old wall gave way, creating an opening that the inmates used to flee the facility. The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched a manhunt  to recapture the escapees.

According to The Punch Newspaper, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the jailbreak. Security agencies are working together with local authorities to track down the fugitives.

NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar has called on members of the public to assist by providing any information that could lead to the arrest of the escapees. Citizens can report tips through the NCoS Response Desk hotlines: 07087086005, 09060004598, or 08075050006.

This incident raises concerns about the state of security and infrastructure in Nigerian correctional facilities, especially during adverse weather conditions. Authorities have assured the public that measures will be taken to strengthen security and prevent future escapes.
