Peter Obi Confirms 2027 Presidential Bid: Details on When, Where, and Why

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency of Nigeria again, come 2027 general election. Obi made this announcement on Sunday, July 6, 2025, during a live interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme and in a live session on X Spaces, where he addressed supporters both in Nigeria and abroad. This announcement was made in Channels Television’s Sunday Politics where Obi appeared as a guest on the popular political programme, and he was directly asked about his political ambitions for 2027. He stated, “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it”.

X Spaces Live Session: On Sunday night, Obi also spoke to his supporters via a live X Spaces session, reiterating his decision and answering questions from Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.

This announcement happened on Sunday night, July 6, 2025, during Channels TV’s Sunday Politics and a live X Spaces session, both held on the same day. Obi outlined several key reasons for his renewed presidential ambition:

Urgent National Reforms: He believes Nigeria is in dire need of urgent reforms, especially in areas like security, education, and poverty reduction. Obi promised to stabilize the country within two years if elected.

Single-Term Promise: He pledged to serve only a single four-year term, arguing that a serious and committed leader can make a significant impact within that period.

Respect for Zoning: Obi emphasized his respect for the informal zoning arrangement in Nigerian politics, which he views as a stabilizing factor, even though it is not constitutionally mandated.

Coalition and Good Governance: While open to opposition coalitions, Obi ruled out alliances that do not prioritize solving Nigeria’s most pressing issues, such as insecurity and economic stagnation. He stressed that any coalition must focus on stopping killings, reviving the economy, and restoring productivity.

Rejection of Vice Presidential Speculation: Obi dismissed rumors of being a running mate to former vice president,  Atiku Abubakar, clarifying that no such discussions have ever taken place and reaffirming his commitment to contesting for the top office himself.
