The popular story of Hari, the lion, illustrates the need of knowing who we truly are. Our identity is what defines us, and if we don't know who we are, we end up frustrated and unsatisfied with our lives.
Hari was picked up as a cub by a sheep who assumed it was her missing lamb and from then she began grooming him as a lamb.
Hari grew up among other lambs believing that he was a lamb, but soon the other sheep complained that he was too rough and rowdy not gentle and sweet as a sheep should. He was more like a lion than a lamb.
Mama sheep would say to Hari, "Dear, try to be a good sheep. A good sheep, be nice to people, agree with what they say and be obedient and don't ask questions.” Hari agreed to this, but as he grew, it became more difficult for him to behave as a sheep.
Most times, when we find ourselves in really difficult and unrelenting situations, it could be a pointer that we are not where we are meant to be. Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo once said that, frustrations are pointers to problems that need fixing and just as Hari countless individuals because they don't know who they are are uncomfortable with life.
Time passed by and Hari got bigger and scarier for a normal sheep, so the rest of the sheep began to avoid him calling him names," Abnormal.” “ He is non-rhotic, with a personality disorder!”
They whispered among themselves, they didn't see him as a lion, but as an abnormal sheep.
Hari got depressed and one of the days he felt blue, he began questioning his identity. “ Was he a sheep or wasn't he?” “If he wasn't, what was he? Why was he ever born? What use was he to anybody?”
These were all beautiful questions, but he couldn't provide the answers to them? He needed someone who knows him better than he knows himself and from experience he knew the answer didn't lie with the sheep, not his mama, they too were confused.
On one occasion while he was soaking himself with questions upon questions, something strange happened another lion came by and after series of meetings and life-changing encounters with him.
He finally realized that maybe he could become something like the lion, not the best sheep ever and somewhere in between Hari's thought it occurred to him that he could be a lion for he was a lion.
He became a lion, it wasn't easy. He abandoned the sheep fold, his past identity, forgetting the Young Ram's club, the one thing he was good at as a sheep.
Just as Hari, you too can find out who you are, but you'd need determination and someone who knows you better than you know yourself, and that person is God. It took a lion to bring out the lion in Hari, it'd only God to bring out greatness in you. He knows you and He can help find yourself. Jeremiah 1:5
