This rare tidal occurrence happens during the spring and fall equinoxes when tidal ranges are greatest, caused by the alignment of tidal harmonics from the gravitational forces of the sun and moon combined with the unique geography of the area. The exposed seabed is a sand ridge formed by sediment deposits in calmer waters between the islands.

The event is deeply rooted in local legend that says: long ago, tigers forced villagers to flee from Jindo to Modo, leaving behind an elderly woman named Bbyong. She prayed to Yongwang, the sea god, who sent a rainbow over the sea, parting the waters and creating a path for her to reunite with her family. This story is celebrated annually with the Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival, featuring traditional performances and cultural activities.
